Conditions
Cancers we treat
We assess almost every kind of solid tumour, not just the few listed below. Cytotron® therapy is always planned within the care your oncologist provides, never instead of it. Here's where it fits for the cancers we see most, and what we'll work out with you at consultation.
FDA-designated
Breast cancer
One of three cancers covered by the Cytotron®'s US FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, granted in October 2019. Breast cancer was also the most common diagnosis in the published 2016 clinical study.
- Where it fits
- Planned into your wider treatment — surgery, systemic therapy, hormone therapy, HER2-targeted treatment — with the order worked out individually. Most of the women we see are partway through systemic therapy or in the maintenance phase after primary treatment.
- Who we assess
- Anyone with a solid tumour visible on a recent scan, well enough to attend daily sessions, and under the care of a treating oncologist. Your hormone receptor and HER2 status shape the wider programme we build around you.
- Your course
- Daily sessions over a defined period, with a review scan at a point agreed with you at the start. Length is set from your own imaging — genuinely yours, not a standard package.
FDA-designated
Liver cancer
The second of the three FDA-designated cancers.
- Where it fits
- Planned around resection, transplant assessment, TACE, ablation and systemic therapy, with the timing agreed case by case. Many of the patients we meet are on systemic treatment or between treatment lines.
- Liver function guides the timing
- Your bilirubin, albumin, INR and overall liver reserve shape whether now is the right moment and whether daily attendance will suit you. We ask for recent liver function tests as part of the free review, so we can give you a considered answer rather than a quick one.
- A word on expectations
- Liver cancer is often diagnosed late, and families arrive having been given difficult news. We'll always tell you plainly what we think is realistic in your situation, before you commit to anything.
FDA-designated
Pancreatic cancer
The third FDA-designated cancer, and the one where we're most careful about what we promise.
- Where it fits
- Planned into standard treatment across resectable, borderline, locally advanced and metastatic disease. The realistic goal differs enormously between those groups, and we'll be clear about which applies to you.
- Comfort and daily life matter here
- For many people the questions that matter most are pain, appetite, weight, energy, and time spent at home feeling like yourself. Our programme addresses these directly, and for some of our patients that's the main reason they come. We think that's an entirely worthwhile goal.
- Support alongside
- If you'd benefit from specialist symptom and palliative support, we'll help you connect with good services in the NCR. Excellent symptom care sits very comfortably beside everything else we do.
Registered study
Brain tumours and glioblastoma
Brain tumours have the clearest formal study link in the Cytotron® record. NCT03577600, registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, covers compassionate treatment in children with brain tumours.
- Adults
- We see adults with glioblastoma and other brain tumours, planning around their resection, radiotherapy, temozolomide or tumour-treating field therapy.
- The blood-brain barrier
- Families ask about this often, and it's a smart question. The barrier limits which medicines reach brain tissue. The Cytotron® delivers an electromagnetic signal rather than a drug, so the barrier isn't an obstacle to reaching the target area in the same way.
- Children
- We assess children only in close partnership with their paediatric oncology team, so everyone caring for your child is working from the same plan.
Emerging use
Almost all other solid tumours
Beyond the cancers above, we assess almost all solid tumours: prostate, colorectal, lung, ovarian, kidney, cervical, head and neck, and many rarer cancers. If your cancer forms a tumour that shows on a scan, send us your reports.
- Where the evidence sits
- Research in these areas is at an earlier stage than for the three designated cancers. At consultation we'll talk through what's reasonable to expect in your particular case and help you weigh it up properly.
- In the published study
- Many of these tumour types were represented in the 2016 clinical study, which included lung, ovarian, colorectal, prostate, kidney, cervical and several rarer cancers.
Being straight with you
When we'd suggest another path
Part of looking after you well is being clear when Cytotron® therapy isn't the right fit. We'll say so, and point you towards what would help more:
- Blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The device targets a defined tumour area, which suits solid tumours.
- When there's no measurable disease on a recent scan. We'd have nothing to map a plan to, or to measure progress against.
- When daily attendance would be a real strain given how you're feeling or how far you'd travel. A course that can't be completed comfortably helps nobody.
- When specialist symptom care would serve you better right now. We'll help you find it.
